Yes, it is most certainly a proper English word!
Here's the definitions given in my dictionary and by Rational:
Webster's Dictionary:
" a simple man-made object, such as a knapped flint, that provides evidence
of an ancient culture;
a work of art."
Rational's Definition: (From the RUP Documentation):
artifact
(1) A piece of information that (1) is produced, modified, or used by a
process, (2) defines an area of responsibility, and (3) is subject to
version control. An artifact can be a model, a model element, or a document.
A document can enclose other documents.
A piece of information that is used or produced by a software development
process. An artifact can be a model, a description, or software. Synonym:
product.
We all realize that "American English" may be somewhat different from the
"Queen's English" but there you are :-)

The linguistic engineers around here complain about the name artifact,
because "it is not an English word"... It should have been 'artefact' in
their opinion.
Is the word 'artifact' defined by Rational?
