This is all true, but you'll probably want to read the Rose Help under
"Controlled Units". Rose keeps a model in one or more files, and the files are
controlled units which store all, or part, of a model. Model elements you can
place under version control include model (.mdl file), logical package and
use-case package (.cat file), component packages (.sub file), deployment diagram
(.prc file), model properties (.prp files) and external files associated with
model elements.

It certainly would be easier to checkout a class, or individual diagram, edit
it, and check it back in, but that's not the usage model we have to contend
with. Consequently, using Rose in a team environment takes a little more
planning, and consideration on the front end.

You don't ! The only element that you can control in a multiuser environment
in Rose is the "Controlled Units" which in Rose are Packages. I.e. a user
can only check out one (or more) packages to do work on. If by chance this
package contains 4 diagrams and 10 classes, this single user locks access to
all 4 diagrams and 10 classes even though he was just going to add a note to
one of the diagrams....... I.e. you've experienced one of the very bad
weaknesses of Rose; the configuration management scheme.

In my oppinion it should be possible to "check out" only one class, one
diagram, or any one item of significance, independent of where in the
logical or physical structure the item is located. For this to happen in
ROse, Rational must seriously re-consider their flat-file repository.

Apart from this, multi-user access does work pretty good, as long as you
have a change-management tool (clear case or Visual Source Safe etc.)
integrated with Rose.

Arne
