To be perfectly frank I think any process/methodology acts as a placebo
allowing the necessary cultural changes to be adopted more readily. Any
methodology you adopt should be designed to address the problems you
actually have. I would focus more on what needs to be done rather than what
Rational, ObjectMentor or any other methodologists say you need to do. Start
out by checking out Scott Ambler's Process Patterns book, and also look at
Project Management Anti-patterns. If there are useful practices in XP then
adopt them (eg, pair programming) - you don't have to call it XP. You don't
have to call it anything - it's just a snappy name to make it easier to
create a buzz about it - as is RUP, DSDM or Catalysis. Good software
engineering is good software engineering regardless of the name of the
process. Let's face it - RUP projects fail all the time, and SSADM projects
do occasionally succeed! Just buying the tools and putting up the wall chart
is not enough. Adopt best practices, get into good habits! If you want a
catchy name to print on your t-shirts then I recommend something like the
Extremely Unified Development Method.
Best of luck!
