Sequence diagrams are meant for design purposes and actually realise the
use case. You should have some sort of description for the use case that
details the flow of actions (and alternates) through the use case. You
then realise that use case in your logical view (using the realization
relationship) and within that realised use-case you define your sequence
diagrams. The sequence diagrams should fall out easily from your
high-level use case descriptions.
As for question 2, "How many statechart diagrams can I have for an object?"
the answer is as many as you need or want that helps you to see how the
object behaves. Clearly there will be one almighty diagram, but you may
want to break it up into smaller, more manageable chunks.
