We have purchased RUP as bundled with Development Studio but use it as a reference library for specific techniques etc. Our development process is ICONIX with minor additions. The key difference is that ICONIX, in effect, is a practical and easy to follow subset of RUP. Unlike RUP, it does not consider project management, configuration management etc. It simply focuses on getting from requirements to code safely with a high degree of traceability. The only technique not covered in RUP is Robustness Analysis. I personally feel that RUP would be more suitable for large projects and ICONIX for small to medium.
