Ari,

  The behaviour of Automatic Resize is different than
what you are expecting.  It only automatically resizes
when the icons change or when the function is turned
on.
  
  If you want to apply this to all items in a diagram
you can use Format>Autosize All.

See the note under the help section entitled:
"Automatic Resize (Format Menu)"
