The theory is that the use cases are a requirements analysis artefacts (i.e. the problem statement), whereas sequence diagrams are design artefacts (i.e. the solution statement). As there are many solutions to one problem, there are many possible collaborations/realisations that can implement the same use case.
And the reality? Most systems don't really have that luxury -- or burden depending on the way you look at it. If you really are going to have a highly distributed system with several possible implementations for the same use case or some requirements that will be met in several ways by differently tweaked products, yes, work with realisations of use cases (collaborations). If, like the majority of the community, you are gpoing to go from use cases to ~one~ design/implementation, save yourself the trouble and put the diagrams directly under the use case. It is easier to reorganise your model in the future if the need ever arises than to go through the hassle of maintaining a complete but expensive model for a few years.
