Hello Anthony

I suppose this depends on your definition of a prototype.

For example, the DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method) uses
evolutionary incremental
prototyping where the initial functional prototypes evolve, by increments,
into the final system.

DSDM defines four kinds of prototype:
- Business: mainly aimed at demonstrating business functionality.
- Capability: mainly aimed at proving the technical feasibility.
- Useability: mainly designed to prove the user interface.
- Capacity: this is aimed at proving performance.

The DSDM states that in practice a System Prototype will probably be a
mixture of the above
at any one moment in time as the development system evolves into the final
production system.

Best Regards.

Hi Scott

Just to correct one minor point - RUP does *not* suggest you just build a
prototype of the system in Elaboration, it says that the exit critera for
the Elaboration phase is that there is a working, executable architecture -
ie you have driven the key arhcitecturally significant use cases through to
code and test. These are not prototypes - this is the real thing (albeit
it
may not be 100% complete).

I suspect this is probably what you meant anyway, but just to make it clear
what RUP says...I definitely see projects (working with one right now) that
have got confused on this.

regards

anthony
