The major problem with using your real email address on public forums is spamming. Spammers regularly trawl through news groups and use the addresses on them for spamming. Consequently I use a public/free email account for news groups and my own email address I keep for trusted third parties. One recent posting to comp.lang.java immediately resulted in 12 spam messages which luckily crowded the inbox of my public account and not my regular account.
The Rational Forums are not news groups and therefore a little less public. But we've had plenty of Nigerian scam emails addressed to the forum so its not immune. I think that Om Naidu's advice is correct in suggesting care in what private information you reveal. This is good general advice for all emails. However, I feel it is not correct to assess the capabilities of a sender based on their email address alone.
