Title: RE: (ROSE) realtime uml

The particular real-time notation that uses capsules etc. comes from the ROOM notation rather than Bruce Powel-Douglass' book.  The book on this is:

Real-Time Object-Oriented Modeling
by Bran Selic, Garth Gullekson, Paul T. Ward, Brian Selic, Jim McGee
John Wiley & Sons, 1994
ISBN: 0471599174

Unfortunately, it's expensive and hard-cover.

ObjecTime, the CASE tool for ROOM was bought out by Rational and became Rose Real-Time.

The things that are called capsules in Real-Time UML are called actors in ROOM, but they got renamed to avoid confusion with UML actors.

Probably the best place to look for useful web pages is Cetus.
http://www.cetus-links.org/oo_uml.html though their link to the ObjecTime site doesn't lead you to anywhere useful at Rational.

My understanding is that the capsule notation will become part of the UML standard in version 2.0, but as an extension to the existing classes and components, to which it will be possible to attach ports.  The draft 2.0 spec. also includes Protocol State Machines, which appear to be equivalent to the state machines in ROOM, and can be associated with the behaviour of a class in response to a message on a port.  There is also something new called a Timing Diagram in the draft spec.

However, there will inevitably be a lag while the CASE tool vendors catch up with the new standard.  So it depends what your need is.  If you need to be able to model real-time systems now then Rose Real-Time is currently the answer.  (Though there are real-time tools from other vendors that support variations of UML for real-time
