Just came across this on tvtome.com, it settles the whole David/Kevin thing,
thought it was interesting:
****************
138. Everyone Comes to Jackie's
gs: Michael O'Keefe (Fred) Johnny Galecki (David)
Jackie's house buzzes with activity as Roseanne tries to hide David from
Dan.
b: 08-Feb-1994 pc: 715 w: Betsy Borns & Mike Gandolfi d: Philip Charles
MacKenzie
NOTE: We get reaffirmed David's real name isn't David, but Kevin, as we
find out in episode The Bowling Show when he was first introduced.
a.. Roseanne never actually states that David's real name is Kevin, and
Dan disregards her and continues on with the argument they are having, as if
she was just being sarcastic - which in fact she was. Since Mrs. Healy (David's
mom) and Mark (his brother) always called him David, there is no reason to
assume that Roseanne's statement is anything other than a joke. The writers on
the show had wanted to call the character David from the beginning but were
unable to because Johnny Galecki was playing a character with that name on
another ABC sitcom at the time of his first appearance on "Roseanne". By the
time of his next appearance, the other sitcom had been canceled, so the writers
used the name they had originally wanted, instead of staying with Kevin. If
they had wanted to explain it they probably would have at the time, but
obviously they felt no need and assumed that everyone would just accept David
as the character's name. Already on just the second appearance of the character
on the show, everyone in the family refers to him as David before Darlene ever
says his name at all, so the Darlene-changing-his-name theory really doesn't
wash - except, as a JOKE.
