You're using the Keramik theme, I presume?  There's nothing we can do about 
user preferences.  Those widgets are QButtons (probably) and it's up to KDE 
to decide how to draw them.  I definitely agree with the design decision to 
use buttons for these, but it's a pity that some widget sets have such bad 
buttons.

I use Keramik too, because it's cool looking, and I'm willing to sacrifice 
function for the sake of form in this case, but its buttons completely suck.  
I can't tell when the buttons on the transport are depressed either.

To prove it to yourself, try using the "light marble" or "hicolor default" 
themes and have another look.  The buttons are considerably more obvious.

Maybe the maintainer of the Keramik theme would accept a patch?  I've been 
meaning to look at that myself, but there's so much to download, and so much 
to compile, and perhaps it has already been fixed in CVS anyway.
