OK, no metronome. While I thought it was doing more last night (ie moving,
just not recording) what happens now is that as soon as I hit record (from a
fresh start, empty composition) the transport jumps to -00:00:04 and sticks
there until I hit stop.

I can repeat the -00:00:04 thing consistently.

RG says:
rosegarden: MIDIInstrumentParameterPanel::populateVariationList: variation
type is 0
rosegarden: setAudioMonitoringState - false - instrument = 2000
rosegarden: SequenceManager::record() - starting to record MIDI
rosegarden: SequenceManager::record() - starting to record

seq says:

rosegardensequencer: RosegardenSequencerApp::play() - starting to play
AlsaDriver - initialisePlayback
rosegardensequencer: jumpToTime(sec : -4, usec : 0)
rosegardensequencer: fillCompositionWithEventsUntil : eventsRemaining = false
rosegardensequencer: RosegardenSequencer - Stopped

Well, there's the -4...
