I'm trying to bring my system a bit more up to date in preparation for
this expo thing this week. I thought if nothing else I ought to get
fluidsynth working (I'm still using iiwusynth) , the latest jack, a
few of the other synths now available, etc., and have a go at getting
some VST stuff working using the ladspa vstserver.

Haven't got far yet, but my first question: Fluidsynth builds fine,
but it won't build with JACK support. Even if I enable it explicitly
in the configure arguments, it ignores me. There's no reference at
all to JACK in config.log apart from in the resulting environment
variables at the end (generally empty). What's going on there? I
don't have pkg-config -- do I need that for JACK? It certainly
doesn't say so.

As for VST,I got vstserver built, but then I started paying a bit more
attention to what it could actually do for me, and I couldn't find
anything much that was even worth trying to demo. I know nothing
about VST and I know we can't use VST instruments, only possibly
plugins, so: are there freely available VST plugins that are really
better than their LADSPA equivalents? Point me to one, and I can
have at least one go at failing to get it to work with RG. If I
don't really find anything or it just doesn't work, I won't bother
with any of it at the expo, since I'd rather be using the little
laptop anyway and I have my doubts about VST and Wine on that.
There's a list of VST plugins "that work with ladspa vstserver"
somewhere on djcj.org, but most of them are synths and few have
straightforward descriptions of download location and how to build.
