Let's not waste too much time on this. The debug output issue could have been 
solved by building with --disable-debug and redirecting what was left to 
/dev/null, instead both Chris and me lost a few hours in getting the thing 
back into compilable state again (I did the same changes as Chris, but was 
interrupted right before I could commit them, and when I got back I was 
confronted with dozens of cvs conflicts, and another dozen later on because 
Chris hadn't fixed everything in one pass).

The doc switching is not essential and can wait IMHO. Optimisation can (I'm 
tempted to say 'must') wait even more, way past 1.0. Right now we're very 
very close to having something releaseable. Not 1.0pre-material, but we've 
almost got back to the functionality level we had prior to switching to mmap 
scheme. May I suggest we focus on this ?
