Yes, that sort of thing should work. I've never actually tried amSynth but I believe it's a soft-synth that accepts input via the ALSA sequencer API and sends output to JACK; if so, then it should work fine. Rosegarden should notice that it's running and offer it as a MIDI device that you can assign tracks to. You can then also (in principle, although we're starting to get fiddly here, and this is something that's broken in current CVS) record the output from JACK back into Rosegarden as audio.
