Actually I don't really remember that... hm. It sounds difficult to do, since the canvas item on its own doesn't have access to enough information to draw itself (the staff uses a lot of context when drawing canvas items). Otherwise, it's not quite the same. In my suggested scheme the QCanvasItems wouldn't exist at all until that area of canvas was scrolled over. Once created, they would be the same as they are now.
