OK, inspired by Bownie's foolishness in attempting to do serious optimisations at dangerous times, I went ahead and tried it. It was pretty easy to do, and seems on first sight to work very well. I'm about to commit the change, although I'm keeping a not-quite-so-new version around as well just in case it all goes wrong at the expo.
