Bourne-derived shells traditionally read .profile only when you
login, and the rc file (.bashrc or whatever) when a new interactive
shell is started.  I don't think they ever read both, unless you
read one from the other (as people often do).

... depending on your distro, I guess.  I found (back when I had an
AWE card) that SuSE added an sfxload to the rc scripts for me
automatically when I configured the card, which was very nice of it.
