It's not so straightforward, you quickly end up into some useability issues. 
I'm not sure many people would expect toggling a ruler to count as a document 
change. We have the same problem for the playback cursor position, ideally it 
would be saved, but we can't really do that because then merely playing a 
file would be a document change.

Perhaps we need a "weak change" concept. Changes which are not enough to mark 
the document as modified when they happen on their own, but which are saved 
along anyway if other edit operations occur.
