I've found this to be pretty universally the case as well.

Looking at solutions for would-be RG users on slowish hardware, desktop people 
have the option of buying a $15 SB Live!, but I know of nothing I can suggest 
for laptop users stuck with on-board audio.  Short of buying some kind of USB 
MIDI gadget and some far more serious MIDI hardware, do they have any 
alternative?  How about other on-board hardware synths supported by ALSA?  
I'm only aware of the emu10k1 and the earlier emu8-something.  When I looked 
recently, I couldn't find the soundcard matrix I remember, that used to list 
the capabilities of each card.  The current matrix doesn't seem to show 
what's supported on what any longer.

All of which is probably grossly irrelevant to this particular thread, mind 
you.  Working to avoid the need to use software synthesis is a bit 
antithetical in a discussion of Chris's cool new toy.  :)
