That's very interesting.  I've never heard anything quite like that before.

Is it still doing it?

From what you're saying, the symptom appears to be constant crackly noise 
while playing through a DSSI synth (any one, or just Xsynth?) but that 
doesn't happen if playing or recording audio without any synth plugins.  Is 
that right?  What about effects plugins -- does adding (say) reverb to an 
audio sample track cause this problem?
