Yes, I think we need a 1.0 branch for bug fixes only, plus any number of short-lived branches for trying out particular bits of work -- as William said, I'd suggested to him that a part-writing branch was a good idea; the same would apply to things like true multitrack recording. We'd aim to merge branches like these back to HEAD as soon as they've passed as proof of concept, I imagine. The canvas stuff on the other hand I think should go straight into HEAD, because it's so fundamental that I want to see it well tested and thrashed into submission as soon as possible. I did create a 1.1 branch (UNSTABLE_1_1) once upon a time, with a view to encouraging people to commit stuff that they didn't want to forget about but that would only distract from 1.0 stabilisation. However, it didn't really get used -- I think everything in it is also in another branch (HEAD or stg -- which I'll merge back to HEAD during 1.1 development). So the 1.1 branch should probably be left to wither.
