One thing I had meant to add (but forgot) was that you might find the DSSI Mono and Stereo Samplers useful for doing this kind of thing. I'm sure you know all this, but I'll summarise their good and bad points. All these plugins do is play a single sample per instance, triggered from a MIDI note, repitched if required, and optionally either heeding the NOTE OFF or playing to the end of the sample each time. They're ideal for tracks where you want some simple repetitive pattern but you want to be able to tweak it and play it to note timing. Because these plugins always load the sample into RAM and play it from there, they're not good for very long samples -- unlike Rosegarden's own audio file playback, which streams direct from disk for audio files over a certain size. On the other hand this means they can be more efficient (and less buggy!) than playing straight from Rosegarden, if you happen to know that a sample can be played from memory when Rosegarden would normally play it from disk. Also, ironically enough, because these plugins use libsndfile to load their sound files and libsamplerate to resample them, they actually support more file formats than Rosegarden and produce better-sounding output for files recorded at different sample rates from the current JACK one. (They don't do high quality resampling for repitching, though, just linear resampling. Laziness.) They don't give you audio previews in Rosegarden, and of course you can't record direct into one. You do still have the ability to add effects and things to them.
