We have several RFEs addressing this issue. [ 750997 ] Implement proper ALSA ports http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=750997&group_id=4932&atid=354932 [ 763942 ] alsa client connection choice http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=763942&group_id=4932&atid=354932 [ 937362 ] smarter device connection management http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=937362&group_id=4932&atid=354932 I don't remember a discussion and detailed plan to implement (or not) the above requested features, but it's time now to talk about it. My proposal is to create as many sequencer output ports as rows of "Play devices" defined in our "Manage MIDI Devices" window. The user could create and remove output ports, and this set of output ports would be persistent between RG sessions, and visible (and manageable) under external programs like QJackctl and Kaconnect. There would be a minimum of one output port, but it is not necessary to create as many ports as now, one for each possible writeable connection; perhaps there could be an option (a button or menu item) for the user to request this function. The internal routing of tracks and IPB settings would remain the same, or with very little changes. There should be also a configuration checkbox located elsewhere (Configure Rosegarden->Sequencer settings->...?) to allow the simple, automatic internal connection management like now, easy for little home studios, but also the option of letting the connections to be managed entirely by external session management tools, which would be a better suitable option for large professional recording studios. This proposal is for output ports only. The input port would remain unique, and behave the same as now. Comments, please?
