If you are interested in "remoting" MIDI, you might look at IEEE P1639
(AKA DMIDI). It didn't make standard, but Phil got demonstration
programs working on several platforms.
Please see our shameless propaganda:
http://cmt.gla.ac.uk/News/dmidi.html
Of course, UK academic funding being as start-stop (but mostly stop) as
it is, Phil and Barry don't work here any more and are sadly missed.
I'm sure Phil will be delighted to talk to people on the subject
though. He is a fine open-source kinda dude. Although he has come over
all OS-Xy recently.

It isn't quite that easy either. I've played with this a little,
because I
have two terminals that are basically diskless workstations. (They're
not
actually diskless because I got fed up keeping all that stuff working,
and I
had a ton of small, old hard drives laying around anyway, but they
behave in
principle the same way as diskless workstations.) I never really
achieved
satisfactory or useful results with MIDI, and I never got remote audio
working in any fashion Rosegarden could use in any way. That was
awhile
back. Maybe JACK has some kind of client/server remote network
capability
now that I'm not aware of. ALSA's MIDI sharing is very limited, as
you and I
discussed some time back....
