I bought a Brother HL-5170DN, and it solved the problem.  I copied the PPD 
from the CD, followed the steps outlined in the online help page thing, and 
boom.  Output looks absolutely fantastic.  This will probably solve myriad 
other problems I've had ever since I bought that original printer too.  It's 
the first time I've ever seen a CUPS test page with a complete box all the 
way around the outside edges.  "Works perfectly" my ass, although back in 
2001 I was satisfied with "works 90%."

So, my official recommendation to anyone with Rosegarden printing problems is 
to suck it up, take a crowbar to your wallet, and buy a real PostScript 
printer if everything else fails.
