We've never found the resources to provide _release_ binaries -- how are
we ever going to provide snapshot ones? Admittedly the effort is
probably only about the same, but even so.
Automation! Set up a process. Doing so can help speed the release
process because packages are being tested throughout the whole
development cycle, ie. the package problems are gone when the release
comes around. I can't give appropriate links right now because SF is
sketchy, but for example you may want to look at the Bleeding-Edge
Inkscape Fatory (BEIF) and the new in development testing framework
Crucible as examples of how we automate things.
Inkscape has been using Autopackage <http://autopackage.org/>
And how do they find it? In particular, do they get a lot of reports of
problems with the packages themselves that have to be resolved?
Yeah, when the new guy (me) started making packages there was a host of
problems because he had no clue what he was doing. But as problems are
reported, they get fixed. And I think the packages are pretty solid
right now.
I'd try out their package, except that Autopackage packages always seem
to bugger up my Debian menus and I've never yet seen one actually work,
so I'm rather reluctant, but perhaps I've been unlucky.
Oh, I'm sure all those problems have been resolved by now, because
you've taken the time to report them to the developers. ;)
The last thing
I want to embark on is the work of producing packages using a new
format none of us is familiar with that none of us would normally use
(and therefore feel comfortable testing) and then find they only work
for one user in five anyway. And Rosegarden's about as tough as it
gets to package. Although if someone did the work, we could certainly
have a look.
I think I'd like to get Mike Hearn from Autopackage to take a look at
Rosegarden and see if he would be interested in helping me get an
autopackage working. If nothing else I know the Autopackage guys are
always up for a challenge. :)
