OK, the consensus seems to be that we should make this behaviour the
default, and consequently remove the new option for it. We might as
well retain the existing option for chord mode (for constructing larger
chords more slowly, say) though.

This seems reasonable. It is easy to implement new features, but
making an intuitive user interface needs discussion. As a result
of this discussion, a have committed the fix trunk revision 7426
