I have some systems set up to delete HTML-only email automatically, because 
hardly any real mail clients send it -- most use multipart/alternative -- so 
it's a pretty good indicator of spam.  SpamAssassin has a rule to do the 
same, although not everyone uses it.

So I agree, it's a bad idea to send HTML mail without a plain text 
alternative.
