Sorry, I'm probably just being really dense here (I certainly feel it) but -- how would one use this to solve the problem? Instinctively it seems like a pretty bad idea to me -- while I'm reasonably neutral about the idea of having a "note" style be something that isn't a note, I don't really like the idea of _having_ to use a "note" style that isn't a note in order to do something as basic as this. I can't believe it's all that hard to solve the problem (of determining which rests to display where, when overlapping segments), but again, I'm probably being dense, or at least naive.
