I think the ideal thing might be to have some kind of localized internal 
representation, perhaps with a chord builder tool, something akin to the 
fretboard chord builder, that provides a friendly and easy interface for 
people to assemble these things without having to learn anything about 
LilyPond syntax.

Maybe.  I don't know for sure though.  Plus a feature in hand is a lot better 
than all the ideal might maybe what if in the world, and basically this was a 
feature for one guy who seems happy with it like it is, so it's a win.
