I feel strongly that it's irritating that it isn't working.  (btw,
Emanuel, the articles you quoted sound like they're talking about
binary compatibility rather than source headers?)

But I don't feel all that strongly about using this function.  It's
just one function, its behaviour is easily replicated, and we can make
do fine with a suitable wrapper that does "whatever works for
everyone" instead.  The route Emanuel is taking is fine with me.
