You can always just generate a copy of the same file in "permanent space" by 
exporting to LilyPond instead of using one of the print options.  It's the 
same code path to a .ly file either way you trigger it.

My thought on the temporary files is there really isn't any point in looking 
at one unless something crashes along the way.  I guess the middle case there 
is what if the file exports but fails to render.

Oh well.  We can quibble over such details another time.  I should just get 
something done and leave it at that for now.
