Just adding a new typedef and declaring a member variable of that type 
crashes?  Or changing the typedef causes other (unseen here) code to crash?

I can't think of a reason in general why you should not be able to construct 
the DeviceEventMap object on the stack from looking at this.  How you're using 
the thing might well change that though.
