Concerning:

Yes, this is when we take the flags of the notes and group them together by 
making the individual flags into a single line (or beam).

Some option for armed are: selected and ready; selected; ready.

For String Instruments (like a violin) this mean left-hand pizzacato (pluck 
string with left hand instead of right hand).
For horns I thing it means to stop the sound (mute) the note -- but I do not 
know much about horns.

This is probably a generic synthesizer sounds that sounds like a typical string 
instrument -- but not specific to a known string instrument.  I hope that 
helps.
