I see this too, and no, I have no idea why either. FWIW, I'm using Gnome 
and Ubuntu 10.04: I don't know whether that helps narrow down whether 
it's desktop-dependent.

Also, for me the warning box comes up behind the main preferences 
window, and goes away when the preferences window is closed, so I 
wouldn't have realised it was there if you hadn't mentioned it.
