Looking back on it, if that is the code I think it is, it only exists so the big rewrite release screenshots in non-Latin languages wouldn't have any Latin characters depicted. It can literally only translate one string anyway. It's fine with me if you just drop that nonsense. 90% of the time that will be a random string that can't be translated anyway. If I were working on that code right here and now, I'd just blow out the tr() stuff and whistle right along without it. I bet not even one person in the next 10 years will even miss it. -- D.
