I went ahead and tried the test tonight using a Soundblaster card,
having 4 hardware synthesizers.
Though the music notation from the MIDI recording is not perfect, it
looks a lot better when using the emu10k1 synthesizers (which have
negligible latency).
So it appears the latency required to use Qsynth was much of the cause
of the problem.
That means I could do the MIDI recording on that older system, then
finish the work on my more modern production system.
