I wanted to let you folks know that Luis's project piqued my interest, and
I've been playing around with it for the past few days.

The implications for Rosegarden are really interesting. We apparently offer
the only plugin host capable of mating external plugin GUIs to LADSPA plugins
through DSSI. This is something Chris cooked up years ago, but which I don't
think has ever really been utilized until now.

In the course of playing with all of this, I've discovered there are a fair
number of commonly-available LADSPA plugins for which the interface Rosegarden
provides is highly inadequate. Some of them are plugins I've used quite a lot
without realizing how woefully inadequate our interface was.

Where I'm expecting this to lead, eventually, is that there will be much
better external GUIs available for these plugins by way of FLAM, and
Rosegarden will become aware of this, and provide the better interface when
appropriate. What all of this is going to boil down to over time is that
Linux plugins will cease having completely crappy looking, utilitarian
interfaces. It will be possible to design things pretty much to the same
level of polish as can be found on platforms like Windows and OS-X. The
possibilities for what might be done with interfaces are nearly unlimited.

It's a pretty interesting thing. I've always been more of a MIDI and notation
guy, and will continue to be, but I'm enjoying playing around with this new
technology.

A lot of you out there have expressed an interest in doing something helpful
over the years, but I haven't been able to come up with projects for most of
you, because Rosegarden is just a lousy place for an inexperienced developer
to grow up. If you have to ask how to help, or what to do, chances are low
that you will be able to contribute effectively, and that, sadly, is just the
nature of this beast.

Perhaps some of you could help the community at large by designing plugin
interfaces for FLAM. This is mostly a matter of getting familiar with Qt
Designer and Qt's CSS-like stylesheets, and the barrier to entry should be
fairly low in comparison.
