This is especially easy to check with ZynAddSubFX. Just click on the piano
keyboard in the ZynAddSubFX window, and you should see a key light up in blue,
and hear a note play. If that's not working, you're never going to hear
anything from Rosegarden either.

Once ZynAddSubFX is definitely playing, the most basic, generic, default setup
out of the box in Rosegarden should have everything playing through "General
MIDI Device" by default. You want to go into Studio -> Manage MIDI Devices...
and change "General MIDI Device" so that it's sending its data through
ZynAddSubFX instead of whatever else is in there. ZynAddSubFX isn't a General
MIDI synth, of course, but going this route would typically be the least
complicated and most immediate way to experience some quick gratification.
Once you get one thing working, everything else should fall into place little
by little from there.

Unfortunately, the perennial "my sound is busted" issue has always been
Rosegarden's most annoying problem, and there is still nothing decent we can
do about it from inside Rosegarden after all these long years of development.
Sound on Linux is just a crock, and every new thing they invent to try to make
the problem better just makes everything that much worse.
