Hello everyone, my name is Denis. They like to call me Dr Denis. I've
been using Rosegarden for six years now. I have a total of 811 .rg
files that I have created since 2005-09-17. I use Rosegarden
exclusively for MIDI, I don't use Jack or any synth plugins. I wouldn't
know how to if I wanted to.

I'd like to share my opinions on Rosegarden with all of you. I think
Rosegarden is quite good, it works fairly well for what I use it for
(making MIDI music).
Unfortunately, some recent changes have made it harder to use. Since
the matrix view was changed in a recent version, I find it harder to
see where to place notes to get them timed correctly. I'm not sure
what's different, I think the older version had some markings which
made it more obvious.

Some other things which has changed for the worse are the volume and
pitch bend rulers. It used to be possible to click and drag them
around, select multiple at once and delete them, or right click and
select 'clear ruler'. Now you can't really do those things, and it's
not very obvious how you're supposed to use it. After searching google
I eventually found out that you can still insert a line of controllers
by holding down shift. Anyway, I assume this functionality is
unfinished and will be fixed in a later version.

Another problem is that Rosegarden seems to take a long time to start
up these days. In particular, it seems to spend a long time
"initializing [the] plugin manager". I imagine the plugin manager is
only useful if you use Rosegarden for audio stuff. I think it would be
good if it were possible to disable the plugin manager, so far I
haven't found any way of doing this.

Rosegarden also crashes a lot these days. I've experienced a lot of
segmentation faults lately, and sometimes when I start it up there are
strange problems with the interface (such as buttons not drawing and
etc). It seems like Rosegarden has been going through certain changes
and works which still aren't finished, which would explain the rough
edges that I've noticed in it.

Anyway, even despite the flaws, Rosegarden is a good program. Hopefully
it will continue to improve. I could post some of the music that I've
made with it if anyone's interested.

- Denis
