I suspect your long start up and crashes might be related to badly-coded 
plugins ...

What version of RG are you running, on what Linux distro, with what 
hardware?

I have RG 11.11.42 running on Debian Sid with an MAudio Audiophile 2496 
card and a USB-to-MIDI adapter that connects to an external Yamaha 
keyboard. I don't do much audio stuff with RG, mostly scores and MIDI.
