Of course those are legitimate reasons too, but yes, lots of guitar guys fool around with alternative tunings. There are a half dozen or so "standard" alternate tunings, and then all kinds of weird stuff on top of that. It's part of why writing anything for or concerning guitar is always complicated. There's always some guy who complains that your stuff doesn't work in DADGAD tuning or whatever, and can you please support arbitrary pitches for individual strings. -- D.
