I think I see what's going on now. What you said about "MIDI thru" clued
me in.

How do I explain it without getting into the whole hairy picture of how we
do routing? Basically, input MIDI data isn't echoed straight to the
output ports, it's copied and re-sent almost as if it came from a segment.
So output needs a channel. In fact, every track that's armed for
recording or is selected needs a channel to play thru events on.

With auto instruments in the picture, it can't assume the natural channel
is correct. They used to until that caused some problems. So thru
tracks, like auto instruments, pick an unused channel (they actually kick
other auto stuff off that channel, but they avoid channels that any fixed
instrument plays on). They try channel 16 first.

Fixing/improving it: At one point we talked about making thru tracks use
fixed instruments if they see them, but the consensus seemed to be that it
was needless extra complexity. Maybe this is an indication that we should
rethink that. It seems like it would solve your problem in a natural
manner. Since it was a group discussion, I want to at least throw it out
for discussion before I do anything.

The event list can't. The transport display probably could, though I
don't know it well.
