LV2 is still beta, I know, but thought I'd flag it because with the
absence of decent SF2 support (there is the Calf Fluid plug in but the
state of calf plugins is very uncertain, unfortunately) and sfz seems
to have some nice synths.

Perhaps its an error in the plugin, too. Does it work in other audio
tools you have?
Yes, sfizz works at least in Ardour, Carla and Qtractor.
