I think a very basic example should be sufficient. I assume that most distributors will write their own init script anyway to comply to the distribution's policies - for sure, I will do so for Debian. In Debian, the daemon will then be disabled by default and can be enabled by the user simply by changing the configuration in /etc/default/rrdcached - with an appropriate note about possible consequences and a pointer to the documentation, of course.
