Yes, SRV can perform the indirection role mentioned above (I'm not sure CNAME can play the same role.). However, "SRV records will be used by clients for applications where the relevant protocol specification indicates that clients should use the SRV record..."(Quoted from RFC 2782 "DNS SRV RR"). I wonder whether it is practical to require all applications to support SRV RR. Anyway, before using whichever tool (e.g., SRV) for indirection, the ILNP advocators should admit that multiple I records associated with a given FQDN CAN ONLY belong to a single host.
