That's not it; even my old version of gcc fails hard on a missing system
header [which is a relief]. Yet I can certainly compile the code that I
submitted to Rainer a few weeks back (even after a "make distclean"). I
do not yet understand this.

I'm out of time today but I'll take another look tomorrow.

Meanwhile, John, if you'd like me to send you a (SPARC or i386?) binary
or package for test purposes then please shoot me an email off-list and
I'll arrange that.
