Well, maybe it's my failure to understand github, but usually in git a repo
is a repo ... so you clone it, you publish it and you send me a pull
request (or patch or whatever...). I fetch/merge it and finally push it up
to my repo. So I wouldn't see a problem with using the github one.

Does that standard workflow not work with github?
